How Long Does Contact Solution Last After Opening?

2026-05-142 min read

You probably watch your lens replacement dates closely — but what about your solution? Once you open that bottle, how long is it actually good for? Here's what to know about after-opening windows and the signs it's time to toss it.

Solution has both an unopened and an opened limit

Like lenses, solution has two limits:

  • Unopened expiration — printed on the bottle or box. Usually years away.
  • After-opening window — how long to use it once opened. Varies by product.

The date printed on the bottle is generally the unopened limit. After opening, assume it's shorter.

Typical windows by type

After-opening windows vary by product, but the general pattern looks like this. Always check your specific product's instructions.

  • Multipurpose solution (MPS) — many products suggest roughly 30 to 90 days after opening
  • Hydrogen peroxide systems (rub-and-rinse / soak) — often around 60 to 90 days depending on the product
  • Povidone-iodine systems — varies by product

In all cases, track it as "X days from the opening date." Just like lenses, the clock starts the moment you open it.

Signs it's time to replace

Even within the date, stop using it and discard it if you notice:

  • The liquid looks cloudy or discolored
  • Visible sediment or floating particles
  • An unusual smell

These point to bacterial growth or quality loss. Because the bottle tip can introduce bacteria if it touches your finger or a lens, take care not to touch the nozzle.

Tips for hygienic use

  • Don't let the bottle tip touch your finger, a lens, or the inside of the case
  • Close the cap firmly after each use
  • Store away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity
  • Don't transfer it to another container or refill it

"Don't touch the nozzle" is the basic rule for not shortening the solution's life.

What happens if you use old solution?

If you store lenses in solution where bacteria have grown, those bacteria can transfer to the lens and end up in your eye, potentially leading to infection. Even if you manage your lenses perfectly, old solution undermines all of it.

Record the opening date

Solution is one of the easiest items to lose track of. Writing the opening date on the bottle with a marker works, but if you want to manage multiple solutions and lenses together, a dedicated app is more convenient.

In Lenslog, register a solution as "valid for X days after opening" and it shows the days remaining automatically. You can see your lens replacement dates and solution expiry on the same screen, so it's obvious which one runs out first.
